The ceiling cutout is the hole you cut to mount a recessed downlight. Get the cutout size wrong and you face one of three outcomes: the housing won’t fit (too small), the housing falls through (too large), or the bezel doesn’t sit flush against the ceiling surface (visible gap). This guide covers cutout dimensions across the ECOLEDKIT housing range — from 55mm to 200mm — with tolerances, installation notes, and common mistakes.

Why Cutout Size Matters
A recessed downlight housing is held in the ceiling by spring clips or screw mounts that grip the cutout edge [1]. The cutout diameter must be:
- Large enough for the housing body to pass through
- Small enough for the spring clips to grip the ceiling material (typically 3–5mm overlap per side)
- Precise enough for the bezel to cover the cutout edge completely (bezel diameter = cutout + 10–30mm)
The relationship is: Housing outer diameter < Cutout diameter < Bezel diameter
| Component | Size Relationship | Example (6101-55) |
|---|---|---|
| Housing body | Smallest — must fit through cutout | 55mm |
| Cutout | Middle — ceiling hole | 55mm |
| Bezel/trim | Largest — must cover cutout + grip area | 75mm |
ECOLEDKIT Cutout Size Range by Model
Small Cutout (55–75mm) — Residential, Low Power
| Model | Cutout Range | Power Range | Housing Height | Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6101 | 55–105mm | 9–25W | 78–93mm | Standard residential recessed |
| 6102 | 55–105mm | 9–25W | 78–93mm | Same as 6101, different bezel |
| 6103 | 55–75mm | 9–15W | 66–80mm | Ultra-thin, limited ceiling depth |
| 6103A | 55–75mm | 9–15W | 66–80mm | Same as 6103, different bezel material |
| 6215 | 55–95mm | 10–40W | 83–145mm | Versatile, largest variant count |
Installation note for 55–75mm cutouts: At this size, a standard hole saw works well in drywall and plasterboard. In concrete ceilings, use a diamond-core bit. The small diameter means the spring clips have a short grip span — ensure the ceiling material is at least 10mm thick for secure mounting.
Medium Cutout (75–130mm) — Commercial, Medium Power
| Model | Cutout Range | Power Range | Housing Height | Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6201 | 55–95mm | 10–35W | 85–148mm | Deep anti-glare, museum/retail |
| 6203 | 55–75mm | 10–20W | 85–120mm | Deep anti-glare, compact |
| 6205 | 95–130mm | 30–40W | 118–120mm | Shallow recessed, low clearance |
| 6206 | 95–200mm | 30–40W | 100mm | Shallow convex, wide aperture |
| 6208 | 55–125mm | 7–60W | 90–165mm | Full-power deep anti-glare |
| 6211 | 75–130mm | 7–65W | 90–170mm | General purpose, wide power range |
| 6212 | 75–150mm | 7–65W | 77–148mm | Shallow convex, 16 variants |
| 6213 | 75–130mm | 18–50W | 105–150mm | Flush mount, minimalist |
| 6213A | 75–130mm | 7–40W | 88–125mm | Multi-optic (lens/reflector/focus) |
| 6216 | 75–120mm | 30–35W | 125–138mm | Cold-forged deep anti-glare |
Installation note for 75–130mm cutouts: This range covers the majority of commercial installations. For drywall, use a 77mm/90mm/105mm adjustable hole saw. For suspended ceiling grids (T-bar), most 600×600mm tiles come pre-scored for 90mm and 105mm cutouts. For concrete, diamond-core bits at 80mm, 100mm, and 125mm are standard rental items.
Large Cutout (95–200mm) — High Power, Specialized
| Model | Cutout Range | Power Range | Housing Height | Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6206 | 95–200mm | 30–40W | 100mm | Large aperture, shallow depth |
| 6206A | 95–115mm | 30–32W | 120–122mm | Deep anti-glare, high power |
| 6209 | 60×60 to 125×125mm | 7–60W | 90–168mm | Square deep anti-glare |
| 6210 | 60×115 to 125×255mm | 7–50W (×2) | 90–168mm | Double-head square |
Installation note for square cutouts (6209/6210): Square housings require a square cutout, which is more labor-intensive than circular. Use a jigsaw with a down-cut blade in drywall, or a concrete chisel + hammer for masonry. Ensure corners are radiused (not sharp 90°) to prevent ceiling material cracking.
Cutout Tolerance Guide
| Ceiling Material | Recommended Tolerance | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Drywall / Plasterboard | +1mm / -0mm | Spring clips grip well; slight oversize is safer than undersize |
| Concrete / Masonry | +2mm / -0mm | Harder to enlarge after cutting; extra clearance helps |
| Suspended ceiling (T-bar) | Exact size | Tile is fragile; oversize cutout weakens the tile |
| Wood / Timber panel | +1mm / -0mm | Wood doesn't crack easily; standard tolerance works |
Rule of thumb: Cut the hole 1mm larger than the specified cutout size. It's always easier to add a trim ring to cover a slightly oversized hole than to enlarge an undersized one.
5 Common Cutout Mistakes
1. Using the bezel diameter instead of the cutout diameter
The bezel is 10–30mm larger than the cutout. If you cut a hole based on the bezel size, the housing falls through. Always check the product spec sheet for the cutout dimension specifically.
2. Ignoring ceiling depth
The housing extends above the ceiling surface. If your ceiling cavity is only 80mm deep and the housing is 148mm tall, you have a problem. Check the housing height spec before ordering — it's the dimension from the ceiling surface to the top of the housing.
ECOLEDKIT's shallowest housings (6103/6103A) are only 66–80mm tall. The tallest (6208/6209) reach 168mm.
3. Cutting before receiving the housing
Specifications can vary ±0.5mm from batch to batch in die-cast aluminum. Always measure the actual housing you receive before cutting the first hole. Cut one test hole, fit the housing, confirm fit, then cut the remaining holes.
4. Not accounting for insulation
In insulated ceilings, the housing must have clearance around it for air circulation (unless it's rated for insulation contact — IC-rated). ECOLEDKIT housings are IP20 and not IC-rated. Maintain at least 75mm clearance between the housing body and insulation material.
5. Using a worn hole saw
A dull hole saw tears drywall paper and produces a ragged edge. The spring clips may not grip properly on a damaged cutout. Replace hole saws after every 20–30 cuts, or use a sharp utility knife to clean the cutout edge before installation.

Key Takeaways
- Cutout diameter sits between housing body diameter and bezel diameter. Always use the cutout spec, not the bezel spec.
- ECOLEDKIT covers 55mm to 200mm cutout range — residential through commercial.
- Tolerance: +1mm in drywall, +2mm in concrete. Slightly oversized is always safer.
- Check ceiling depth against housing height before ordering. ECOLEDKIT's shallowest: 66mm; tallest: 168mm.
- Always cut a test hole with the actual housing on hand before batch-cutting an entire project.
