What “SKD” means in commercial lighting

In commercial lighting, an SKD (semi-knocked-down) kit ships the fixture as separate parts instead of a finished product. Our SKD kit is a housing kit: the die-cast aluminium shell, the optical parts and the mounting springs. It contains no COB light source and no driver — those are yours to choose. That is the difference between an SKD component kit and a finished luminaire, and it is what the rest of this page explains.

What is inside an SKD kit — and what is not

  • Included: die-cast aluminium housing shell (heat sink and trim ring), optical parts — lens or reflector in 15°/24°/36°/50°/55° options depending on the model — plus spring clips and mounting hardware.
  • Not included: the COB light source and the LED driver. You fit your own brands, or source them locally.

A finished downlight arrives complete. An SKD kit arrives as components, so the light source, the driver and the final certification stay in your hands.

Why assembly plants buy SKD instead of finished lamps

  • Control of the bill of materials. You choose the COB and driver brand, the CRI and the colour temperature your market asks for.
  • Certification where you sell. The housing is passive; the certification of the finished fitting is handled in your own market and under your own brand.
  • Lighter inventory and faster turns. One shell covers many finished SKUs, so you carry fewer part numbers and reconfigure instead of re-ordering.

Kit formats by ceiling type

The range covers 2.5″, 3″, 4″, 5″, 6″ and 8″ round housings, 4″ square housings and a twin-head square model, with cutouts from 55mm to 200mm and power configurations from 5W to 65W. See the full commercial housing range.

Component classification and duty structure

Our kits ship as housing components with no light source and no driver, so they are declared as the component they are — not as a finished luminaire. The applicable classification and duty depend on your destination market’s tariff schedule, and your customs broker makes the final determination. Because tariff headings differ from country to country, we confirm the details with you for your specific market before shipping. Read more about the duty structure of housing kits.

Supplying SKD kits to overseas factories

The same housing serves every market you sell into: you change the driver and the light source, not the shell. That is what makes local assembly practical — one set of housings, many finished products. SKD kits for overseas factories.

FAQ

Is a commercial lighting SKD kit the same as a complete downlight?
