· Client: Procurement manager, Marina Bay hotel (name withheld on request)
The challenge
The client procures recessed downlights for hotel corridors and public restrooms in a Marina Bay
property. Standard aluminium housings bought from another supplier had begun showing oxidation, paint
peeling and rust spots after only six months in the high-salt, humid coastal environment — and the
original manufacturer refused to honour a warranty. The failures were visible to hotel guests and were
damaging the client’s reputation.
They needed 600 sets of 4-inch deep-cup anti-glare housing kits with springs and
gaskets, delivered as a complete batch within seven days.
What we supplied
Because the installation sits in a coastal environment, we recommended moving from a paint-sprayed
finish to a powder-coated housing instead of simply quoting the same specification
again.
The reasoning: paint spraying lays down a comparatively thin film, while powder coating melts and
cures into a harder, thicker protective layer with far better corrosion resistance and weatherability —
precisely what a salt-fog environment demands. Powder coating is also solvent-free, which lowers VOC
emissions and allows overspray to be recovered.
We delivered the full 600-set batch inside the seven-day window.
The result
Almost two years after installation, the housings show no rust problems.
“Amy, it has been almost 2 years since the project installation was completed. Thank you
very much for your professional advice. The powder-coated downlight housings perfectly adapt to the
humid seaside environment, and we no longer worry about rust issues. We will definitely prioritize your
factory for our future hotel renovation projects.” — Client feedback
What this shows
Choosing a housing finish should start from the installation environment, not from appearance. For
coastal or high-humidity projects, the finish specification is the difference between a two-year
replacement cycle and a fit-and-forget installation.
