1. Die-Cast Aluminum (ADC12)

What It Is

Die-casting forces molten aluminum alloy (typically ADC12) into a steel mold under high pressure. It can produce complex shapes in high volume with good surface finish.

ECOLEDKIT example

Our 6100 series (6101, 6102, 6103) and standard 6205/6206 models use ADC12 die-cast aluminum. This is the workhorse of the industry — reliable, affordable, and well-proven for indoor dry environments.

2. Cold-Forged Aluminum

What It Is

Cold forging compresses solid aluminum billets at room temperature under hundreds of tons of pressure. The metal grain flows with the shape, producing a dense, uniform heat sink with no porosity.

ECOLEDKIT example

Our 6201, 6203, and 6216 deep anti-glare series use cold-forged aluminum. These are designed for projects where the fixture is visible and thermal headroom is critical — typical in high-end retail and hospitality.

3. Extruded Aluminum

What It Is

Extrusion pushes heated aluminum billet through a shaped die, like squeezing toothpaste. It produces long, uniform profiles that are then cut to length.

Our 6208, 6209, 6211, 6212, 6213, and 6215 series use extruded aluminum or aluminum profile. This material gives us the flexibility to cover 7W–65W across many cutout sizes without expensive custom tooling.

How to Choose: A Decision Flowchart

Step 1: What is your target power?

Step 2: What is your price target?

Step 3: What is your MOQ?

Step 4: What climate will it run in?

Why Thermal Performance Matters

The LED module’s junction temperature (Tj) directly determines its lifespan:

A better heat sink (cold-forged or extruded) runs 10–15°C cooler than a die-cast housing under the same load. Over a 5-year warranty period, this difference shows up as fewer field failures.

For tropical markets like Southeast Asia, where ambient temperatures regularly hit 35–40°C, the extra thermal margin from forged or extruded housing is not a luxury — it is a reliability requirement.

Can You Mix Materials?

Yes, and many manufacturers do. A common hybrid design:

This gives you premium thermal performance on the critical path while keeping cost under control. Ask your housing supplier if this combination is available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is die-cast aluminum bad quality?

A: No. ADC12 die-cast is the industry standard for a reason — it is reliable, affordable, and well-proven. It is perfectly fine for most indoor downlight applications under 25W.

Q: Is cold-forged always better?

A: Better thermal performance, yes. But it costs more and makes sense mainly for high-power or premium visible fixtures. For a 10W residential downlight, the extra cost is rarely justified.

Q: Which material is best for 40°C tropical climates?

A: Cold-forged or extruded aluminum. The higher thermal conductivity gives you margin when ambient temperatures stay high all day.

Q: Can I change material for an existing model?

A: The housing geometry changes with material — die-cast parts cannot simply be swapped to forged. You would need new tooling. Choose the material early in product development.

Q: How does material affect weight and shipping cost?

A: Cold-forged is lightest per unit of heat dissipation; die-cast is heaviest. For large import shipments, weight affects freight cost.

Which Material Does ECOLEDKIT Recommend?
